Weekly Torah portion
Parascha Bo בא
Exodus (Schemot) · Exodus 10:1-13:16
„Come"
Summary
The portion begins with the final three plagues brought upon Egypt: locusts, darkness, and the death of the firstborn. These miracles were intended to demonstrate G"d's power and to break Pharaoh's resistance to letting the Israelites go.
Before the final plague, the Israelites were commanded to perform the first Passover offering, marking their doors with lamb's blood so the Destroyer would pass over their homes. This event marks the birth of Israel as a free nation.
Following the death of the firstborn, Pharaoh finally orders the Israelites to leave, and they depart in haste, not even having time for their bread to rise. This mass exodus fulfills the divine promise made to their ancestors.
The portion concludes with instructions for future generations to remember the Exodus through the festival of Matzah, the dedication of the firstborn, and the wearing of Tefillin as signs of the covenant.
