Weekly Torah portion
Parascha Vaera וארא
Exodus (Schemot) · Exodus 6:2-9:35
„And I appeared"
Summary
G-d reaffirms His covenant with the Forefathers and promises to rescue the Israelites from slavery using four expressions of redemption. Moses and Aaron are tasked with demanding that Pharaoh let the people go, though G-d warns that Pharaoh's heart will be hardened.
When Pharaoh refuses to listen, G-d begins a series of wonders to demonstrate His sovereignty over nature. The first seven of the Ten Plagues strike Egypt: Blood, Frogs, Lice, Wild Animals, Pestilence, Boils, and Hail.
Despite the suffering of the Egyptians and the miraculous protection of the Israelites in the land of Goshen, Pharaoh repeatedly retracts his promises to free the slaves. The portion ends with the devastating plague of hail and Pharaoh's continued refusal.
