Weekly Torah portion
Parascha Beshalach בשלח
Exodus (Schemot) · Exodus 13:17-17:16
„When he sent"
Summary
After Pharaoh finally lets the Israelites go, G"d leads them toward the Red Sea rather than the direct land route to avoid immediate war. When the Egyptian army pursues them, the sea miraculously splits, allowing the Israelites to cross on dry land while the pursuing chariots are swept away.
Following their rescue, Moses and the people sing the Shirat HaYam (Song of the Sea) to praise G"d. As they travel into the wilderness, the people complain about hunger and thirst, leading G"d to provide Manna, a heavenly bread that falls daily except on the Sabbath.
The portion concludes with the Israelites facing their first military challenge when the tribe of Amalek launches a surprise attack. Joshua leads the defense while Moses holds up his hands to ensure victory, establishing a perpetual remembrance to oppose evil.
