Weekly Torah portion
Parascha Ki Tisa כי תשא
Exodus (Schemot) · Exodus 30:11-34:35
„When you take"
Summary
The portion begins with a census where every Israelite contributes a half-shekel to the Sanctuary, ensuring all are counted equally. G"d also provides instructions for making the holy anointing oil and incense, and appoints Bezalel to lead the construction of the Tabernacle.
The narrative shifts to the tragic episode of the Golden Calf, where the people lose faith while Moses is atop Mount Sinai. In anger and grief, Moses smashes the original Stone Tablets, then intercedes with G"d to spare the nation from total destruction.
After G"d forgives the people, Moses carves a second set of tablets and experiences a profound divine revelation. When Moses descends from the mountain, his face radiates spiritual light, requiring him to wear a veil when speaking to the people.
