Weekly Torah portion
Parascha Vayera וירא
Genesis (Bereschit) · Genesis 18:1-22:24
„And He appeared"
Summary
The portion begins with Abraham recovering from circumcision and showing extraordinary hospitality by welcoming three strangers who turn out to be angels. They inform him that his wife Sarah will soon give birth to a son, despite their advanced age.
G"d reveals His plan to destroy the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah due to their wickedness. Abraham famously bargains with G"d to spare the cities for the sake of any righteous people living there, though only his nephew Lot is ultimately saved.
The narrative reaches its climax with the birth of Isaac and the Binding of Isaac (Akedah). G"d tests Abraham's faith by asking him to offer his son as a sacrifice, ultimately stopping him and providing a ram instead.
