Weekly Torah portion
Parascha Shmini שמיני
Leviticus (Wajikra) · Leviticus 9:1-11:47
„Eighth"
Summary
The portion begins on the eighth day of the Tabernacle's inauguration. Aaron and his sons begin their service as priests, and the Divine Presence appears to the entire nation through a heavenly fire that consumes the offerings on the Altar.
A tragic event occurs when Nadab and Abihu, Aaron’s eldest sons, offer an 'unauthorized fire' and are consumed by a flame from G"d. This teaches the importance of following Divine instructions with precision and reverence when approaching the sacred.
G"d then outlines the laws of Kashrut (dietary laws), distinguishing between animals that are pure and impure. This system provides a framework for the Jewish people to achieve holiness through the physical act of eating.
