    Parascha Matot מטות

    Numbers (Bamidbar) · Numbers 30:2-32:42

    „Tribes"

    Summary

The portion begins with the laws concerning vows and oaths. It explains that when a person makes a verbal commitment to G"d, they must be careful to fulfill their word, though in certain cases, a father or husband may annul a woman's vow under specific conditions.

Following G"d's command, the Israelites wage war against the Midianites. This battle served as an act of justice for the Midianites' earlier role in leading Israel astray, and the soldiers later underwent a process of ritual purification upon their return.

The tribes of Reuben and Gad request to settle in the fertile lands east of the Jordan River. Moses initially disapproves, but he agrees after they promise to lead the vanguard in the conquest of Canaan to help the other tribes secure their inheritance.
