Weekly Torah portion
Parascha Eikev עקב
Deuteronomy (Dewarim) · Deuteronomy 7:12-11:25
„Because / As a consequence"
Summary
The portion begins with Moses promising that if the people listen to and follow the laws, G"d will maintain His covenant and provide abundance. This includes physical health, agricultural prosperity, and victory over the nations currently inhabiting the land.
Moses warns the people against pride and self-righteousness. He reminds them that they are inheriting the land not because of their own merit, but because of G"d’s promise and the wickedness of the current inhabitants, citing the incident of the Golden Calf as proof of their past failings.
The parashah also contains the second paragraph of the Shema, emphasizing the connection between observing the commandments and the natural cycles of rain. It concludes by stressing that total devotion to G"d is the key to successfully settling the Land of Israel.
