Weekly Torah portion
Parascha Bamidbar במדבר
Numbers (Bamidbar) · Numbers 1:1-4:20
„In the wilderness"
Summary
The book begins in the second year after the Exodus, as G"d commands Moses to conduct a census of the Israelite men. This count ensures the nation is organized and ready for the challenges of their upcoming journey toward the Promised Land.
The Israelites are instructed to arrange their camp in a specific formation surrounding the Tabernacle. Each of the twelve tribes is assigned a precise location under its own tribal banner, creating a sense of order and divine presence in the center.
Special attention is given to the tribe of Levi, who are chosen to serve in the Tabernacle instead of the firstborns. Their specific roles involve transporting the sacred vessels and maintaining the holiness of the sanctuary during their travels.
